Cutting Work Party
June 3rd, 2007

For our tree cutting work
party on June 3rd we advertised on both Thumpertalk &
KTMtalk.com. Additionally, we notified John Casteneda
(with NMA) who maintains a database of willing
volunteer's e-mail addresses. Through these
communications we learned there were two other groups
going out to do the same kind of work the day before our
work party. Steve Tjelde spoke to representatives from
both of those groups before and again after their work
parties so we had a good idea of what needed done and
where. We also learned the Cascade Family Motorcycle
Club will be working on Saturday, June 9th to do some
trail brushing work on our side of the mountain.
We ended up with fifteen
bodies carrying six chain saws. Nobody counted how many
trees we had to cut, but it was a lot. The work seemed
to get done quickly with so much help. Everyone left
Sunday afternoon tired, but with a great feeling of
accomplishment.
It was strange to me how
so many trees fell in the same exact place, ending up
being stacked on top of each other, making the cutting
difficult and much more dangerous. It looked like a
giant-sized game of pick up sticks. To make it even more
bizarre a lot of what we worked on was in clear cut
areas where there weren't many trees to begin with. So
why did the few trees left in these areas have to fall
on the trails?
As far as we know, all
the trails are now passable to bikes. DNR will have to
bring in the trail machine to repair and
widen areas where root balls tore up the trails so quads
can fit.
